I don't expect most non-geeks to know the difference between a backslash and a forward-slash, but why can't people just agree to say "slash" and leave well enough alone? By now, people know which slash to use with URLs, so why bother trying to be more specific, only to get it wrong?

I like people knowing where I am. I like it because they know what time zone I'm in to know I'm awake or asleep. I like the fact that my friends know where they would need to be to look me up. I don't like people who just try to be friends with whoever they can find in the same city.

Seriously, I don't know you. I've never heard of you. You happen to live in the same general vicinity as me, that's all. So do a half-million other people. The only thing that sets you apart from them is that you also happen to be a member of the same site as me. Big deal. Please don't add me as a friend.

I can understand how this modern world makes people lazy, but it's only one extra keystroke to get it right. And it's not even a difficult one. See, it's that big honkin' bar at the bottom of your keyboard. You can't miss it. You probably use it more than any of the other ones. But the one time you really need it, it gets the cold shoulder. Please, for the sake of space bars everywhere...give it some love. A lot.

Why, in this modern, lazy world, do people insist on hitting an extra key every time they write a plural, even though it's wrong? I'd think they'd be glad to avoid the extra keystroke, if only they knew it was unnecessary. I expect such people fall into two camps: those who think it's actually the right thing to do ("every word that ends in 's' needs an apostrophe") and those who don't know which way to go and simply err on the side of extra punctuation ("even if it's not right, it certainly can't be wrong"). I don't even care which camp you're in. Join the third camp, with those of us who actually know the right way to do it.

I won't even get into the whole "it's" vs. "its" thing.

Why is it that social network owners seem to think it's a good idea to automatically add themselves to the friends of all new users? I don't know you, I certainly haven't had a chance to like you. I don't even know if I like your site, I just signed up to see if it's worth anything. When I see your name on my friends list, I get an answer: probably not.

Well, I think we're all worthy of ignorance, stupidity and laziness at some point or another, myself included.

I guess maybe I should throw certain verbs in there too. I never learned the proper name for this, so I'll just give an example of the plurals and verbs both misused in a popular tongue twister.

:(

What you're describing is still talking about possessive form, I'm talking strictly about plurals.

Yeah, think of it as a programming language. ASM. Why can't it be written in Python? :(

@ericflo, I don't know who sent me the invite, nothing from Brightkite ever said. I don't remember signing up to be invited, so I assumed it was somebody I knew, but who knows. If I did sign up for it, then it kinda makes sense, but even then, it shouldn't have made him my friend. Maybe for most cases that makes sense, but not when I'm just inquiring about the site at large, without knowing anybody on it.

I don't know. I actually got mad when I signed up on Brightkite and the same thing happened. Grrr...

You've got a ton on your mind when you're entering your username and password? ;) I'm all for making freeform text areas as big as possible, but for things like registration and login, it just doesn't make sense to give each box its own ZIP code.
